What Is a Magnetic Drive Pump and How Does It Work?
No shaft seal, no leak path, no emissions. The engineering behind seal-less pumps, explained without the marketing fog.
A magnetic drive pump is a centrifugal pump with no shaft seal. The motor never touches the pumped liquid: torque crosses a solid containment shell through a magnetic coupling, and the liquid stays hermetically inside. That single design decision removes the component responsible for the majority of chemical pump failures — the mechanical seal.
The anatomy
Three parts do the work. The outer magnet carrier bolts to the motor shaft and spins at motor speed. The containment shell — a static, pressure-rated polymer or metal can — separates the motor side from the liquid side, with a static O-ring as the only seal. Inside, the inner magnet assembly is fixed to the impeller; locked magnetically to the outer carrier, it spins the impeller without any physical connection through the shell.
The trade you make
The impeller shaft runs in sleeve bearings lubricated by the pumped liquid itself. This is the design's strength and its one rule: the pump must always run wet. Dry running destroys the internal bearings in minutes. Solids foul the close bearing clearances. And the magnetic coupling transmits limited torque, which caps practical size — our range runs to 600 LPM and 32 m.
When it is the right answer
Hazardous, toxic or fuming liquids where a weeping seal is a safety incident. High-value liquids where leakage is product loss. Crystallising solutions that shred seal faces. Hard-to-access installations where seal maintenance is disruptive. In all of these, the higher purchase price is repaid by deleting the seal-maintenance cycle entirely.
When it is not
High flows and heads beyond magnetic coupling limits, slurries and solids-bearing liquids, and duties where the pump may run dry without protection. In those cases a properly specified mechanical seal pump — with the right faces and flush plan — remains the correct engineering answer. We manufacture both, and we will tell you which your duty actually needs.
