How to Select an Industrial Vertical Sump Pump

Pit depth, chemistry and solids decide everything. The selection logic for getting sump duty right the first time.

Vertical sump pumps exist because pits are the worst places to put a pump. The motor stays above the liquid, the column reaches down into the sump, and nothing that matters sits in the corrosive flood. Selecting one correctly is mostly about three measurements and one honest answer.

Measurement 1: Pit depth and column length

The shaft length must reach the pit floor with the suction at the right submergence, while the discharge head and motor stool stay above grade. Our standard builds reach 6 m; deeper pits are engineered on request. Measure to the lowest operating level, not the top of the pit.

Measurement 2: The chemistry

Effluent, pickling waste, chemical drainage — the wetted parts take whatever arrives. Cast iron suits neutral utility water; SS 304/316 covers food, pharma and moderate chemistry; PP wetted parts make the pump effectively corrosion-proof for acid effluents. State the pH range and the worst chemical likely in the stream.

Measurement 3: Flow and head at the duty point

Sump duty points are frequently underestimated because the discharge head from pit bottom to destination is measured casually. Calculate from the lowest liquid level to the highest discharge point, plus pipe friction. Our range covers 120 m³/hr and 110 m; larger duties get engineered selections.

The honest answer: what is actually in the sump?

Rags, scale, packaging, floor sweepings — real sumps are not laboratories. Impeller type and passage size are selected against the realistic solids content. A clean-liquid impeller on a rag-bearing sump is a blockage schedule, not a pump.

The details that prevent callbacks

Specify the float-switch and level-control arrangement at order time. Ask for a discharge arrangement that matches your pit cover. And confirm spare shaft sleeves and bushes are stocked — the wear parts are cheap; the downtime is not.

Send the pit dimensions, liquid description and duty point — we return a drawing-level selection with the column length engineered to your sump.
