Common Causes of Centrifugal Pump Failure — and the Fix for Each
Twenty-five years of pump repair, distilled: the failure modes we actually see, in the order we actually see them.
We spent our first decade repairing other manufacturers' pumps before we built our own. The failure modes repeat across every industry and every brand. Here they are in the order we actually encounter them, with the fix that holds.
Seal failures (the plurality)
Usually not a bad seal — dry running, crystallisation, wrong face materials, or shaft movement from misalignment. Fix the system cause and the seal lasts; replace the seal alone and you'll be back in months.
Cavitation damage
Gravel noise, fluttering gauges, pitted impellers. The cause is almost always the installation: clogged strainers, excessive suction lift, undersized or over-elbowed suction lines, or the pump pushed too far right on its curve. Check the strainer first; it costs nothing.
Bearing failures
Misalignment, over-tensioned couplings, water in the oil, or cavitation vibration transmitted upstream. Precision alignment at installation and oil discipline are the whole story here.
Corrosion of wetted parts
A material-of-construction error at purchase. SS 316 in hydrochloric acid, mild steel in chlorides, PP above its temperature. The only fix is selecting the right material the second time — which is why MTCs and written MOC confirmation matter.
Impeller and wear-ring wear
Abrasive particles in the liquid, or running at shut-off where recirculation chews the internals. Strainers, duty-point correction, and material upgrades where abrasion is structural to the duty.
Motor overload trips
Liquid denser or more viscous than the selection assumed — SG 1.4 fluid on a water-sized motor. Motor sizing must follow the actual liquid, always.
The pattern
Notice what is missing: manufacturing defects. The overwhelming majority of pump failures are selection, installation or operating-condition failures. Which is good news — all three are fixable before purchase, in a twenty-minute duty-point conversation. That conversation is what our enquiry form starts.
