Application Guide
Sulphuric Acid Transfer Pumps
From dilute to 98% — the material answer changes completely.
Sulphuric acid spans the widest material range of any common industrial liquid: dilute grades are handled economically in PP, while concentrated 98% acid demands PVDF or specific alloys. Dilution is intensely exothermic — temperature at the pump is often higher than the tank reading suggests.
The pumping challenges
- Concentration completely changes material compatibility
- Dilution heat spikes liquid temperature at the pump
- 98% acid has SG ~1.84 — nearly double water's power demand
- Air ingress on suction side accelerates corrosion
Material options
PP for dilute grades below 70 °C
PVDF for concentrated acid and higher temperatures
Alloy 20 construction available for specific metallic requirements
Technical considerations
- SG 1.84 at 98% roughly doubles shaft power — motors must be sized on SG, not water
- Seal-less magnetic drive strongly preferred for concentrated acid
- Confirm whether duty is transfer, circulation or tanker unloading — suction conditions differ
- Temperature measured at the pump, not the storage tank
Honest limits: no pump material is universally compatible with every concentration and temperature of a chemical. Final selection is confirmed against your exact duty — that's why we ask before we quote.

FAQs
Common questions on this duty
No. Dilute acid (below ~50%) runs comfortably in PP; concentrated 98% acid needs PVDF or specific alloy construction, and its high specific gravity demands a larger motor. We select against your exact concentration and temperature.
