Steel Pickling Pumps
Hot HCl and H2SO4 with iron in solution — the duty that defines material selection.
Pickling lines circulate and transfer hot hydrochloric or sulphuric acid carrying dissolved iron — simultaneously corrosive, hot and mildly abrasive. This is the duty where non-metallic pump engineering proves itself: PP and PVDF wetted parts simply do not corrode where metal pumps measured life in weeks.
The pumping challenges
- Hot acid with dissolved metal salts
- Continuous circulation duty
- Abrasive iron scale in solution
- Fume-laden atmosphere attacking all externals
Material options
PP for HCl pickling within temperature limits
PVDF for hot or sulphuric duty
Polymer-lined or solid non-metallic wetted parts only
Technical considerations
- Iron content and temperature stated at enquiry — both change the selection
- Sump and pit transfer served by vertical long-shaft pumps with PP wetted parts
- Continuous duty selections carry conservative margins on bearing life
- Bypass and recirculation arrangements reviewed with your line layout
Honest limits: no pump material is universally compatible with every concentration and temperature of a chemical. Final selection is confirmed against your exact duty — that's why we ask before we quote.

FAQs
Common questions on this duty
Yes — this is precisely the duty PP/PVDF pumps were invented for. Non-metallic wetted parts do not corrode in pickling acid; customers who switched measure service intervals in years.
