Application Guide
Ferric Chloride Transfer Pumps
Heavy, corrosive and unforgiving on metal.
Ferric chloride is the workhorse coagulant of water and effluent treatment — and one of the most corrosive common liquids toward metals, attacking stainless steels rapidly. It runs at high specific gravity and is usually handled as a 40% solution that stains everything it touches.
The pumping challenges
- Rapid corrosion of SS 304/316 and most metals
- SG ~1.4 at 40% solution — higher power demand
- Crystallises and clogs on evaporation at seal faces
- Aggressive staining makes leaks immediately visible and messy
Material options
PP — standard, economical, fully resistant
PVDF for elevated temperature
No metallic wetted parts
Technical considerations
- Motor sized at SG 1.4, not water
- Seal-less magnetic drive eliminates crystallisation seal failures
- Flush-and-drain points recommended on the installation
- PP construction keeps lifecycle cost low on a consumable-chemical duty
Honest limits: no pump material is universally compatible with every concentration and temperature of a chemical. Final selection is confirmed against your exact duty — that's why we ask before we quote.

FAQs
Common questions on this duty
Ferric chloride attacks stainless steels aggressively — it is one of the classic 'stainless is not stainless' liquids. Non-metallic PP/PVDF construction is the standard answer and lasts for years in this service.
